GIVING HEAD-STARTS TO CHILDREN
FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES
The CHILDREN AND TEENS COMMUNITY HUB PLUS (CATCH Plus) is a holistic activities programme for children from low-income families in Jalan Kukoh, under the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Constituency. There are currently over a hundred children attending CATCH Plus programme.
History & Objectives
Initiated by Dr Lily Neo, Grassroots Advisor and MP for Jalan Besar GRC in June 2011, CATCH Plus had its beginnings as CATCH, with the aim to:
- Mentor children (aged between 7-16 years old) from low-income families to give them a head-start in life and fulfill their potential.
- Provide a safe, secure, and friendly environment for the children to learn, play and socialize with other children, volunteers and mentors (primarily tertiary-level students – we also hope to enlist parents as volunteers)
With CATCH’s success, the grassroots organizers have upgraded and enhanced the programme and renamed it CATCH Plus to better cater to the children’s needs by running the programme as an activity centre from 1 pm to 10 pm daily on weekdays.
Funding
Primary funding for CATCH Plus is currently derived from the Lee Foundation, and managed by the Kreta-Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee (KA-KS CCC). Some programmes and activities are supported by sponsors and community partners, including VWOs.
